Riva is one of the best known boat brands in the world, largely due to the Riva Aquarama, the runabout of choice of the 'jet-set' of the late '60s and '70s. This achingly beautiful boat marked the end of the wooden craft built by the original Riva company.
Riva was effectively founded in 1842 when Pietro Riva won a contract to repair some storm-damaged fishing boats on Lake Iseo in Northern Italy. Setting up a workshop in Sarnico, he tired of repair work and began producing his own fishing boats.
In the 1880's Ernesto Riva, one of Pietro's sons, took over the Riva yard and began to build passenger vessels and fitting them with early piston engines. His own son, Serafino, succeeded him and started racing hydroplanes, a very popular sport in the '20s and '30s.
By the 1950's Carlo Riva had taken the helm and built the Aquarama as well as the Riva Florida and Riva Junior, among others.
Financial problems in the 80's and 90's led to a takeover by Ferretti in 2000.
Now Riva builds the successor to the Aquarama, the fibreglass hulled and diesel powered Aquariva, along with a range of open sports boats and an increasing range of sports cruisers up to the 115' flagship, the Athena.
Other models are the 92' Duchessa, the 86 Domino, launched in 2008, the 85 Opera Super and the 75, Venere.
Riva also build the 68' Super Ego, 63' Vertigo and the Sportriva 56. The Rivale and Rivarama are open express cruisers.
Below the Rivarama in size is the Aquariva, styled to resemble its older sibling and the Sunriva, a fast open centre-console boat completes the range.
