When buying a berth; it is the lease you are purchasing which typically has 8 – 12 years to run in French and Spanish ports and anything up to 45 years in some Italian ones. The purchase price in some French ports can seem disproportionate to the port rental rates, but that is because in general the rental berths are simply not available. This is the well known phenomena of supply and demand.
